Renting a Street Legal Golf Cart on the Outer Banks

Renting a street legal golf cart, also known as a Low-Speed Vehicle (LSVs), during your vacation on the Outer Banks is a great way to get around town. Whether you’re planning to use a golf cart to get to and from the beach or to cruise out to dinner, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations in the town you’re staying in. Each northern Outer Banks town has specific regulations regarding golf carts and LSV’s.

In Corolla, the general rule is that golf carts and street-legal LSVs (low-speed vehicles) may be driven throughout the town on roads that have a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less. Golf carts and LSVs can be driven in neighborhoods and side roads in Corolla, as well as across Route 12. Several communities in Corolla have specific regulations: Corolla Light, Ocean Sands, and Ocean Lake. Corolla Light does not allow golf carts, but they do allow LSVs. Golf carts and LSVs are both prohibited within the communities of Ocean Sands and Ocean Lake.

The town of Duck is golf cart friendly. Golf carts and LSVs are permitted to be responsibly operated on all public streets that are 35 miles per hour or less. In addition, LSVs may be driven along Route 12 through the village of Duck. In general, the village of Duck is bordered by the Four Seasons neighborhood to the south and Sunset Grille & Raw Bar to the north. Golf carts are permitted to cross Duck Road (NC12) throughout the Town of Duck. Golf carts are not allowed to use the boardwalk, pathways, sidewalks, bike lanes, or road shoulders. Golf carts and LSVs are not allowed in the Sanderling community in Duck or on any beaches.

In Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head, LSVs are allowed on roadways that have a speed limit of 35 mph or less. Golf carts are not permitted.
